David C. Sanborn has had a career in maritime operations and administration. He worked for Dubai Ports World, a large port management firm owned by the government of the United Arab Emirates, as Director of Operations for Europe and Latin America. On 24 January 2006, Dubai Ports World announced that Sanborn had been nominated by U.S. President George W. Bush to the Maritime Administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation, reporting directly to Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta.〔http://www.dpiterminals.com/fullnews.asp?NewsID=39〕
Shortly after Sanborn's appointment, the White House announced the sale of U.S. ports to Dubai Ports World, sparking the Dubai Ports World controversy.
